The talk will deal with the evolution of modern military intelligence, as a consequence of defeats that various countries have suffered in the 19th century, and more to the point, how codebreaking in the World War I finally made intelligence matter to the generals. It is the subject of an article in the Sept-Oct issue of Foreign Affairs.
