Call for Participation

Following up the successful summer school in 2005, the Nordic Network on Variation in Speech Production and Perception (VISPP) will organize the Second International Summer School on Speech Variation in Kuressaare, Estonia in August 2008.

Tutors include distinguished researchers offering lectures and guided tutorials on different aspects of variability in speech communication — expressive speech, talk-in-interaction and multi-modal communication.

The programme also will include hands-on activities involving progression from multi-modal data collection through analysis to implementation in a talking agent.

Student presentations are natural part of the programme, as well.

Kuressaare is a charming seaside resort on Saaremaa, the second-largest island of the Baltic Sea. The venue chosen for the Summer School will give participants nice environment for concentrated work and also provide them stimulating surroundings and many options for interesting excursions.

One of the VISPP network's main goals is to establish contacts and promote cooperation between researchers and Ph.D. students from different countries and disciplines through workshops and courses. In this spirit, the Summer School welcomes post-graduate students from any country interested in the phenomena of spoken language variation and motivated to engage in open-minded interdisciplinary learning.

The working language of the school is English.

Participants must have proficient oral and written communication skills in English. Please fill in the registration form and supply all requested information; if there are more applicants than places available, the organisers will make their selection based on their evaluation of the applications.

In order to participate actively in hands-on activities the participants are expected to bring along their personal laptops.

Welcome to Kuressaare!
