SIMP/STEP: A Space-Time Event Processor Speaker: Silvio Capobianco Abstract: Developed by Ted Bach as his PhD project, SIMP/STEP is a software implementation of Toffoli and Margolus' "programmable matter" concept. Written as a Python module, it allows designing general-purpose cellular automata by exploiting the propagation-collision discipline typical of lattice gas automata. The latest version is available as source code and presently compiles on 32-bit Windows and Linux machines. In this talk, after briefly introducing the "programmable matter" concept, we will perform a demonstration of SIMP/STEP by reconstructing from scratch a cellular automaton and a lattice gas chosen from a broad literature. Duration: 30 minutes.
