Abstract: Already in the early days of computing it was realized that computers will be more than just efficient tools. In a speech on "electronic brains" Lord Louis Mountbatten, the President of the British Institution of Radio Engineers, told in 1946 about the recent invention of a "memory machine", "the information library of the future" - which took another half a century to come true in the World Wide Web. He also envisioned a "revolution of the mind" and therefore emphasized the great responsibility of the developers of this technology. With the dramatic effects of modern information technology on all areas of human culture we now realize which kind of Pandora's box was then opened.
